May the Odds be Ever in Your Favour
With a matter of days to go till the release of the final instalment in The Hunger Games franchise, excitement is building to see the conclusion of one of the all-time highest grossing films. As well as a gripping storyline of drama, violence, action and romance, it has provided some classic lines that are likely to be quoted for years to come.
My own favourite is the salute given to the tributes as they prepare to compete for their lives. "May the odds be ever in your favour" suggests that the outcome is a lottery but the hope is that things will go your way by luck or by chance. If, like Katniss Everdene, you are well prepared, focused and know what has to be done to succeed, the odds of success can be improved.
It struck me that the way many business owners go about searching for property for their business reduce the odds of finding anything suitable. The biggest issue is simply a lack of understanding of whatís involved and the time it can take to complete a search. Sometimes, the job is delegated to someone more inexperienced.
But what exactly are the odds when it comes to finding a property for your business. You know the size of building you need, you know what you want to be able to do in the space, you probably know the ideal location, but how easy is it to find a property that exactly fits your needs? The reality is that in most cases it is like searching for a needle in a haystack and the odds are stacked against you.
With odds that are inevitably higher than those of Katniss Everdene (at 23:1), competing for her life in the "Hunger Games", perhaps the only way to reduce them is to follow her example - bring in an expert in the early stages to advise, decide what is essential to get the best of whatís available and use expert help to win the best deal for you.
